Daily Report: Oct. 24
Morning Meeting:
After the good morning songs we did Row Row Row Your Boat, we looked at a big educational picture book which turned into a game of “Eye Spy.” Then Elijah got a magic box which contained some huge Godzilla slippers. Then we did jobs assignments. Our meeting was short today, we were hungry so we just went to snack after that.
Snack Time:
Addison got out the cups for everyone, and Pearson handed out napkins. We got some delicious oatmeal cookies to munch on.
Outside Play:
We didn't go outside for long in the morning because it was cold- there was some swinging and zipline fun. We spotted a beautiful spider and watched him for a min. Later Elijah and Pearson went on a bug hung and found all kinds of bugs. Crickets, slugs, centipedes, and grubs- Elijah captured them and took some of them home to his own habitat. In the afternoon Dalila got out the nylon basketball net/ game and the basket of colored balls (ball pitballs). They had a great time dumping out the balls, kicking them and throwing them backwards up the net, etc. There was no structure to their game playing at all but it was thrilling for them.
Project Work:
We painted our inedible halloween cookies. Each student got a collection of shapes and a range of paintcolors. Elijah was the quickest and made the most. Pearson however stayed longer than anyone else when he became inspired, realizing that he could put details on his shapes instead of just making them asingle color. His Frankenstein cookie was pretty impressive. Addison was very proud of her big green maple leaf cookie- she called “Idid it, I did it! Its here!”
Rest Time/ Focused Work:
Once everyone laid down Elijah and Kieran got some focus work. Elijah did a vocabulary worksheet where he practiced writing “cyclops.” He did two journal entries- one on each side of his journal paper, he practiced the letter “S,” and colored in some shapes accordingly(a sheet that had dottedlines), cut them out, and then pasted them onto a blank piece of paper (good cutting and precision practice). Kieran did a straight line worksheet and then spent a long time cutting and coloring with markers on a piece of paper. It was demolished when he was finished with it. When Pearson got up he got his own shape cutting worksheet as well as some other usuals. When all of the sit-down work was done Lindsey gave the two older boys an assignment. They had to build a city for bugs out of blocks on top of the lunch table. They had towork out any disagreements between themselves when they occurred. They had an awesome time. One boy would come up with an idea and the other would excitedly say “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah- that's good.” It was wonderful to see them collaborating, and enjoying it so much. They placed wooden trees and toy insects ALL over the place. Most ofthe bugs were perched on top of towers.
Free Play:
In the morning Lindsey got out some translucent legos and puzzle shapes (they fit inside octagon trays) and everyone in the school gathered around the light table to play with them. Pearson and Elijah made their own monster islands, Addison and Lily played with the puzzle pieces, and Kieran ramped a leggo car off of Lindsey's binder that was laying on the table. At the end oft he day Lindsey helped Pearson to create a skeleton mask out of paper.
End of the Day:
The sun came out and we enjoyed playing outside for a while, and when we came in our parents were here. The boys worked so long and hard on their bug city that they were just bursting with energy by the time they went outside, so we let them just enjoy the outdoors while the weather is permissive.

I wanna see the cookies! Sounds like a fun day! How cute about A being so proud of her creation!

It's okay to isolate, as long as you don't do it alone.

A whim, a passing mood, readily induces the novelist to move hearth and home elsewhere. He can always plead work as an excuse to get him out of the clutches of bothersome hosts.

I have been playing a lot of keyboards, especially in the last five or six years. I suppose it gives you more scope than the guitar, although it does tend to make you write a different way.

I feel as if I'm clearly part of a trend among writers who take themselves seriously - and I confess to taking myself as seriously as the next writer.
