Daily Report: Oct. 21

Morning Meeting:

We sang the morning songs and also Twinkle Twinkle, and Row Row Row your Boat. Then we counted the calendar days in English with Addison, and Elijah helped to count in Spanish. Then Dalila introduced the letter “E,” she read the "letter E" book, and wrote the letter on the dry erase board and let them feel the shape with the sandpaper letter. Then she got out her laptop and showed the children images of scarecrows that she found on the Internet. We had some good conversation about the children's plans for their own scarecrows. Inside the magic box was some wooden eggs (for E) which they have to play with in their little kitchen.

Snack Time:

Draven was the snack helper today and put the napkins out for everyone. We had some cheese crackers and goldfish. Elijah had animal crackers.

Outside Play:

We had a great time swinging high on the swings (with some pushes) and flying on the zipline. They also played in the playhouse while Elijah went looking under rocks and howling like a werewolf. We skipped the Afternoon Meeting to enjoy this nice weather playing on the swings and in the sandbox. They also discovered that our plastic fruit that was in the play kitchen inside is now in the kitchen in the playhouse. They had a ball playing with all of it. Pearson had an ant sculpture (see focus work) at the end of the day which he brought outside to enjoy- it got its own swing.

Project Work:

We did a bit of printmaking today with a variety of leaves. We rolled out some paint on a plate or tray with our little foam rollers. After the roller had a nice coating of paint each student rolled some paint all over their leaf. Then we took the leaf by the stem and placed it face down on a piece of paper. We used some scrap paper over top and rubbed all over it to make the transfer. Upon peeling up the leaf we saw a beautiful print. Everyone made several prints in one or more colors.

Rest Time/ Focused Work:

After Kieran listened to a story on his headphones and Elijah listened to his, we sat down for some focus work. Kieran tried his first worksheet today practicing drawing straight lines. Elijah worked in his number booklet, did a journal, a maze and also write "Kieran" as practice. Then Lindsey and the boys sat down together and read some spooky poetry from the books that Kendra donated to us. Afterwards the boys both made their own playdoh sculptures. At that point Lindsey presented to Elijah a 3d craft wood puzzle of an ant. She punched out the shapes and guided him on how to put it together. Pearson came out of the quiet room at that time and after doing his own focus work got to take it apart and put it together himself. Later he traced a rubber bat that Lindsey brought for the kids to play with over the light table.

Free Play:

In the morning Dalila put on some music and some children got out some percussion instruments and made some music. We also showed the children that we now have an insect collection in a tackle box. Lindsey looked at the insects mostly with Pearson and Elijah and took the box to the light table. We spread the insects out on the light table to see their wings light up, and looked at them through magnifying glasses. Later in the day Lindsey showed the children some of our Halloween goodies- each kid got two spooky rings.

End of the Day:

As mentioned above, we stayed outside and played in the beautiful weather until our parents arrived.
