Daily Report: Sept. 25, 08
Morning Meeting:
We sang the welcome song then assigned jobs. Lily was the calendar helper, Lucien (who is back) was the fish feeder (with help from Lily), and Pearson was the snack helper. Lily put up the number 24 and 25, then we counted both in English and Spanish, the days. We had a bit of conversation about what we're doing tomorrow, going to the fair, and the animals we're going to see there. We felt the sandpaper letter lowercase “D” again today, and each child thought of a word that starts with “D”. Then it was time for our magic box which was filled with fruit! Elijah brought one of his books- which is a book of pictures of art made from fruit- people had made creatures out of fruits and vegetables that were so cute and silly! This is along the lines of what our project was for today.
Snack Time:
We had all different kinds of fruit for our snack today to warm up for our project time. Pearson handed out napkins and Addison got everyone a cup. We had water along with our fruit (cantaloupe, apples, bananas, grapes, raspberries, and raisins).
Outside Play:
Pearson saw Elijah slide down our fire pole (attached to the jungle gym) the other day, so he decided that he wanted to try. He climbed up the gym, grabbed on, then swung out. We found out that he's really great at it. Addison- who we thought would be too small for the task- could do it by herself as well! We jumped for joy when we found out that she was, in fact, big enough. They, along with Elijah, spent a long time taking turns sliding down the pole. We spent some time on the swings and in the sand, but mostly our kids were little monkeys today, climbing around.

Project Work:
Every student had their own bowl of fruit and a cup of tooth picks, today. We looked at the book (which had made some ants out of cherries) for inspiration, and went to work creating bugs out of fruit. Addison was the first to make a representation of an actual bug- she strung on some grapes and announced that she had made a caterpillar. Elijah used that idea and made three caterpillars using raisins. When Pearson cut into his apple he said “I think it has milk inside!” when he saw the foamy juice bubbling up. Elijah named his bugs after Lily's name for her bottle- “Ba Ba.”

Rest Time/ Focused Work:
Elijah assembled some insects from some toys we borrowed from Daniel (they resemble Cooties) while he listened to his CD. Then he did his number 8 worksheet, and a quick drawing on the easel when Pearson came out. Pearson practiced writing Elijah's name while Elijah finished his worksheet. Then we played a new home-made game called Space Bingo. This bingo game has all of the letters of the alphabet, and several two letter combinations (th, ch, sh, and oo). The teacher says only the sound that the letters make, so the kids have to figure out which letter to put their token on. They got a star sticker every time they got a bingo. Another great, tricky way to learn sounds.

Free Play:
We had extended free play before our Morning Meeting, today. Elijah and Pearson became totally engrossed in creating insects from the bug toys. Draven tried on many different outfits from the dress up area, and played many different instruments. She also discovered our little mail box. Lucien showed Draven how our marble machine works, then afterwards enjoyed playing music along beside her. Addison created shadows on the wall with the projector and a magnolia pod. She made some artwork this morning tracing, gluing, and drawing.

End of the Day:
We ended up playing outside long enough for our parents to arrive. When we came in our fruit sculptures were displayed on the table for everyone to see.

That tracing thing is so cool. Addison looks so big using it! They really enjoyed the fruit sculpture project, that was a good idea!
