Daily Report: Sept. 9, 08
Morning Meeting:
We sang our morning songs and then assigned jobs. Pearson helped us with the calendar, and pointed at the numbers as we counted the days. Then we counted the days one more time in Spanish, and then sang a greeting song in Spanish (which is starting to catch on). Lily was our Fish Feeder and Pearson was our snack helper today. Then Dalila went around the circle and pointed out colors that the different children were wearing. We counted fingers, hands, and feet- we added them up and practiced some math concepts. We skipped our Magic Box today and went straight to snack.

Snack Time:
Pearson was our snack helper and gave everyone a napkin, and got help from Addison who gave out cups with water. We had Goldfish snacks with water.
Outside Play:
The boys went outside first while the girls stayed in and played for a short time. Elijah, Pearson, and Lucien played on the swings until Addison came outside. They shortly switched to playing in the sandbox making “dunes.” Shortly after our girls came outside, Elijah switched places with them and came inside to play. Later when Lindsey and Elijah had discovered some bugs Maya came out to help us with our investigation of them.
Project Work:
Today we strung used wire to string different colors and shapes of beads. Pearson worked the longest in the studio- first he strung a line of beads all out of the same kind of bead, and then he took them all off! He spent the rest of the time pouring beads back and forth between containers- which was also Lily's favorite part of this exercise. Maya succeeded in stringing a couple of beads- which she managed very carefully. Addison strung a whole line of beads and then put it around her neck and used it for a necklace.

Rest Time/ Focused Work:
Pearson ended up sleeping all the way through nap time, so it was just Lindsey and Elijah. He did his number 6 worksheet and then went to work on his Bug Journal. Lindsey used to copy machine to make Elijah some colored copies of butterfly's, which he cut out and glued into his journal. Afterwards he started on his own book which he can use however he would like. We then read a book called “If You're Angry and you Know it,” which follows the structure of the song “if you're happy and you know it” and it gives some great suggestions for how to handle feeling angry so that you'll feel. Then Elijah and Lindsey went outside after to go on a bug hunt. We found 3 slugs, 1 cricket, 2 worms, 3 snails, and a grub ( when Maya came out to help us near the end). Lindsey recorded Elijah's own words about their behavior into his Bug Journal. We took pictures for later documentation of them.

Free Play:
In the morning Elijah showed to Lindsey some animal dictionaries he brought, and Pearson came to look too. We learned about different kinds of sharks, as well as a variety of snakes. When the boys went outside to play Addison, Lily, and Maya all stayed in to play with the “sparkles” in the sand table. The train set has been our most popular toy lately- Elijah and Pearson have been at it every chance they get. We have also been enjoying putting together puzzles and studying our bugs. Elijah played with the trains pretty much all day. He constructed a fairly complex train track system that connected together in different places. He made a huge chain of train cars to ride on it.
End of the Day:
Elijah brought his bugs inside to show to his friends. Addison and Pearson got some good looks at them before we brought them back into the reading room to hear the story with the rest of the children. Lindsey read a two books to everyone there. One about bugs, and another about a bat loosing a tooth.

What a great day. I LOVE that picture of Lily. How sweet. Pearson and I were talking in the car this afternoon and he told me that he has two interests: bugs and Spiderman. Ha. I am glad the children are all enjoying it.

If this is not done, future ages will certainly look back upon us as a people so immersed in the pursuit of wealth as to be blind to higher considerations.

People never improve unless they look to some standard or example higher or better than themselves.

From that date the abandonment of the older State proceeded with a rapidity never before known, and with it grew the domestic slave trade and the pro-slavery feeling.
