Daily Report: Sept. 2, 08
Morning Meeting:
We had a dress-up meeting, with a couple of princesses, and one scary ghost. When Elijah put on his costume secretly and came back, Addison looked closely at him in his costume with a smile on her face, and then said “that's you!” After the morning songs we read “Beetle Bug's Party” with Maya calling out words that she recognizes- a counting book. Elijah, Pearson, Lucien, and Maya all got to help with feeding the fish, Azul. Dalila's magic box contained beautiful fossil rocks that Dalila collected at the river. Addison was very taken with them. We also put up the number "2" on the calendar under Tues.

Snack Time:
Addison was our snack helper, and helped to serve the children Cheerios and water. She got some help setting the table from Lucien, and help washing the dishes from Pearson.
Outside Play:
Elijah and Pearson and Addison played in the sandbox. Maya climbed up the jungle gym calling “climb up! Climb up!,” when she made it to the top she found her new friend, Lucien had come up behind her to play with her. She gave us a big smile at her accomplishment- though she asked for some help, it turned out that she didn't need any after all. Unfortunately we all learned a hard lesson in throwing sand when Pearson got some sand in his eyes- though he was extremely brave and all of the sand came out pretty easily with a little water- he was straight back to playing after it happened.

Project Work:
The big kids were introduced to wire today while our little ones painted in the other room. There were some distractions, so it didn't last as long as it could have, but we still made some discoveries about the wire. Elijah hung his creation in the window- his “water spicket” that shot water. All three kids also made their own Roller Coaster, as well. It was fun to watch their faces as they interacted with the material. “Its jumping! Boingy Boingy!” said Addison as she made the wire bounce up and down like a spring. Next time we will probably use beads to liven the activity up a bit

Elijah- "Its a helicopter."
Rest Time/ Focused Work:
Elijah played with the train set and listened to his CD while everyone was resting. It was Maya's first time for resting at school, so she didn't know what to think of it at first but soon everyone was settled in comfortably. Elijah finished his number three worksheet, and went halfway through number four. Then he and Lindsey read the book “One Happy Classroom,” Elijah is learning to read even big words, when he gets tired we just slow down and sound out the words- its hard work but he can do it! After, Pearson came out and did a journal entry about a “wolf that shoots water at his heart.”
Free Play:
We got a bit of free play in the morning before meeting where the “marble machine” was the highlight of our play, Lucien's cat was also very entertaining (especially for Maya and Elijah- though the cat was more interested in our fish!). Lucien, of course, played with the trains.
End of the Day:
Lindsey took the boys outside. They played on the double-swings for a long time, working together to keep it moving, until we found a huge Stink Bug crawling up the slide! In one of Elijah's books we found out that he eats grubs, and that there are more than 5000 different kinds of stink bugs, and they are stinky when they feel threatened. So, we had a second studio session when we took him inside, and sculpted him out of play dough. Pearson worked hard and looked at the bug closely in order to represent him out of pipe cleaners and play dough. Elijah made a huge sculpture which he called a “nano-tyrano-spider” -which isn't poisonous to humans, but is poisonous to bad bugs. Addison made her own spider when she woke up, and Maya practiced cutting the dough and the wire with scissors. Afterwards Lindsey read a couple of books to everyone in the Quiet Room.

How precious. I love the RESEARCH that you guys do when the children are curious.

That's exactly what our goal is- turn the children's innate curiosity into natural motivation for discovery and research.

One serious drawback about letters is that, in order to get them, one must send some out. When it comes to the mail, I feel it is better to receive than to give.
